Witness reports of mistreatment, humiliation, and both mental and physical abuse oF Armenian POWs surfaced in December 2020, following the September 2020 attack on Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh in Armenian) by Azerbaijani and Turkish armed forces, as well as Turkish-backed jihadists and mercenaries. Despite cessation of hostilities in November 2020, up to 200 POWs may be presently detained in Azerbaijan in violation of international humanitarian law.
