Decolonizing Music & Dance Showcase

Thursday, December 7, 2017 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Join for a night of celebration and decolonization of dance, music, and thought. Performances include Afro-Indigenous Mexican dance, Pow Wow dance, and music by Latin American composers. Our panel will address how to redefine constructions of "classical" music in Yala/ the Americas through a decolonizing framework and explore contemporary understandings of decolonization and the ways that our consumption and production of art interact with decolonization. They will also engage with legacies of indigenous and afro- musical and dance styles in the Ámericas, their incorporation/ often appropriation by other forms, and their decolonizing role in fighting cultural imperialism.
