Making the world’s scripts accessible: The Script Encoding Initiative in 2018 and beyond

The Script Encoding Initiative project at UC Berkeley has laid the groundwork for over 70 scripts to be used on mobile devices and computers. Still, significant work remains to be done: over 150 scripts remain to be encoded, many that have significant hurdles. For the scripts that have been published in Unicode, fonts and input methods are still lacking or issues involving interoperability may remain. A number of case studies will be presented, included recent challenges, such as Mongolian. The talk will conclude with a Q and A period.
