2021-22 Advocate Mario D'andrea Cañas, the Director of Civilis Derechos Humanos in Venezuela, was a participant in the 2022 Defenders’ Days Conference sponsored by Civil Rights Defenders. 200 human rights defenders from 50 countries gathered in Stockholm where they had a safe space to network, exchange knowledge, and attend workshops over a week.

On October 2nd, 2022, the National Gallery of Art opened the exhibition, “Sargent in Spain,” featuring works of art created by John Singer Sargent during his seven trips to Spain. Several of the paintings depict Spanish Roma people and their lifestyle. Cristiana Grigore, founder of the Roma Peoples Project at Columbia University, was invited to be part of an advisory group assembled by the National Gallery to examine and reframe the narratives around depictions of Roma people.

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) is inviting faculty to submit proposals for the Human Rights Research Award.

The Human Rights Research Award supports Columbia University faculty conducting research related to human rights and will provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable experience. In the 2022-2023 academic year, ISHR will award a limited number of research stipends to students in the amount of $1,750.
