NEW YORK, New York. Columbia University has released an open online course, Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, to examine how Indigenous Peoples have been contesting norms, institutions and global debates in the past 50 years, and how they have been re-shaping and gradually decolonizing these systems at international and national levels. The self-paced course is free and open to all on edX.org with an optional paid verified certificate program.

Columbia alumna Carla Fredericks appointed to head Christensen Fund, focusing on rights-based work supporting Indigenous Peoples

Carla Fredericks, Columbia Law School alumna, scholar, lawyer and advocate for Indigenous Peoples’ rights in governance, development and global policy has been appointed as the new Executive Director of The Christensen Fund. Carla Fredericks currently serves as Clinical Professor and Director of the American Indian Law Clinic at Colorado Law.

The Institute for the Study of Human Rights, through its Indigenous Peoples Rights Program, will participate at the International Congress of Cultural and Creative Industries 2020. The Congress is organized online by the Ministry of Culture of Jalisco and The Office of UNESCO in Mexico. The Director of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Program, Elsa Stamatopoulou, will give a keynote address on 28 October on "Cultural Rights in the Covid Crisis".

The enthusiasm was palpable October 12th at Columbia, but also more broadly, about this first Indigenous Peoples’ Day commemoration at our university. Many Columbia entities collaborated for this, but also the New York University community. We congratulate all cosponsors for the interest, spirit of solidarity and decolonization ethic that embraced the event.
