In a new Rightsviews article, graduate student Bárbara Matias examines the challenges and opportunities for students entering the human rights field. Building on the discussion of panelists at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights' annual Career Panel, Matias explores how students can benefit from the insights of human rights practitioners in the field.

The career panel included experts working at intergovernmental organizations, NGOs and not-for-profit organizations: Mia Briones, a leadership gifts officer at the International Rescue Committee (IRC); Bethany Brown, a researcher at the Health and Human Rights Division at Human Rights Watch; Emilie Filmer-Wilson, a Global Human Rights adviser at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); and Nahal Zamani, an advocacy Program Manager at the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR).

Bárbara Matias is an M.A. candidate at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University.  Her research interests include refugee rights, forced displacement, and human rights affairs in the context of the European Union.
