Michael Miiro

Miiro is country representative for Uganda for the Danish Association of the Physically Disabled (DHF), Uganda. DHF works for full equality and integration of persons with disabilities (PWDs) so that all people may enjoy human freedoms and rights on equal terms with others. DHF Uganda promotes respect for individuals with disabilities such that personal dignity, autonomy and independence are respected and advocates for increased awareness and understanding of the needs and capacities of PWDs in society.

 

Miiro has trained village health teams, health workers and police in sign language and held workshops about PWDs who are living with HIV & AIDS as well as sexual and gender-based violence against PWDs. He worked with the local government on anti-poverty initiatives such as obtaining a grant for PWDs to start village and loan revolving groups, and given PWDs goats, chickens, vegetable seedlings and coffee seedlings to generate income at household level. At a regional level, he worked with other stakeholders to lobby for changing policies that maintain exclusion and segregation of PWDs from society. Furthermore, he started Masaka Cycling Club to promote community awareness of PWDs within society through sport.

 

Miiro holds a Master of Arts degree in public advocacy and activism from National University of Ireland, a post graduate diploma in community-based rehabilitation from Kyambogo University-Kampala, and a Bachelor of Adult and Community Education from Makerere University-Kampala.
