Advocate Julienne Mugaruka Byenda is currently participating in the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP). She is the Advocacy Officer/La Colombe ASBL in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Why did you apply to HRAP?
I hope networking during my participation in HRAP will benefit my organization and the trans community because of the international human rights organizations, institutions, foundations, and donors I will meet in New York City. These meetings can lead to joint projects and funding opportunities for my organization.
Tell us about your HRAP experience so far
I really enjoyed the fundraising classes with Erik Detiger of Philantropia. It was so exciting and interesting talking about budgets, donors, concept notes, etc., with Erik. Thanks to what I learned because of him, our organization accessed $5,000 in funding.
What are you looking forward to seeing/doing in NYC?
At the moment, I don’t have any plans apart from classes. I’m afraid to go outside because of how cold it is.
What has surprised you so far?
The cold that reigns in New York City during the winter is just unbearable.
