Abstract

Examines scholarship of 1985-94 on memory, which has enabled public historians, who work daily with audiences in museums, historic sites, and community history projects, to contribute to the study of the relationship between public history and political culture, popular culture, and the culture of placemaking and to understand how individuals, families, social and ethnic groups, and communities interpret and reconfigure history and attach significance to events and places.
