Abstract

An essay is presented discussing the relationship between collective memory, identity, and justice. It discusses how a community may be responsible for crimes committed in its past, such as slavery in the U.S. or the Holocaust in Germany. The author believes that the establishment of collective memory is difficult in diverse democratic societies due to competing priorities of various parties. He suggests, however, that principles within founding charters facilitate a collective memory.
