Advocate Mary Akrami Pushes for Women's Rights at UN

2009 Advocate Mary Akrami of Afghanistan (left) was in New York for the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. She and other women human rights defenders from Afghanistan, Morocco, Palestine and Sri Lanka advocated for the recognition that women's rights and political participation are central to sustainable development, peace, and security.
 
Mary is the Executive Director of Afghan Women’s Skills Development Center (AWSDC). AWSDC advocates for women’s rights and enhances Afghan women’s livelihoods through educational classes and trainings.
