Seminar on International Human Rights Procedures organized for Indigenous Authorities in Bolivia, 14 May 2023

The Fundación Pueblos de Montaña of Bolivia, in cooperation with the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Program of the Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR), organized a “Seminar on Drafting Complaints and Using United Nations Procedures Against Human Rights Violations”. The Seminar took place via Zoom on May 14th and was addressed to Indigenous Authorities of Bolivia. More than 40 people participated. Professor Elsa Stamatopoulou of ISHR gave the seminar and discussed it with the participants.
Recent HRAP Alum Addresses Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Council at CU

The  Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Council  (WGSS) at Columbia University invited 2022-23 Advocate Jade Jacobs-Wort of South Africa and Stephanie V. Grepo, Director of Capacity Building at ISHR, to speak at their May meeting. Jade spoke about their work as the Co-Director and Knowledge and Research Manager at Iranti, a media advocacy organization defending the rights of lesbian, intersex, and transgender persons in Africa while Stephanie provided an overview of HRAP as it relates to gender, LGBTQIA+ issues, women's rights, and Indigenous rights.

ISHR celebrated the conclusion of the 2022-23 HRAP with a farewell lunch for the 10 advocates who completed the six-month program on May 1st. Columbia faculty and staff from the Morningside and Medical campuses, workshop instructors from human rights organizations and StoryCorps, representatives of donor organizations that support HRAP, and International House staff attended the farewell. On behalf of her fellow advocates in the cohort, Ana Maria Belique of the Dominican Republic thanked everyone for their support.
Front Line Defenders Meets with HRAP Participants

SIPA alum Ana Cutter Patel returned to Columbia University in her new role as the US representative of Front Line Defenders (FLD), an international human rights organization founded in Dublin in 2001 with the specific aim of protecting human rights defenders (HRDs) at risk.

Advocates Chosen to Participate in LGBTQI+ Activism Summit at Harvard

Four of the advocates participating in the 2022-23 HRAP were chosen to participate in the International LGBTQI+ Activism Summit at Harvard University. The one-day summit included sessions with  Professors Timothy McCarthy, Marshall Ganz, Cornell Brooks, Matthias Risse, and Kathryn Sikkink on topics ranging from Transnational Activism Networks and the UN to  Speaking to People of Faith to Public Narratives.
