Join ISHR in welcoming the 2022-23 HRAP cohort to Columbia University! Ten advocates working on issues including LGBTQI+ rights, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, citizenship, migration, women's rights, and environmental justice have been attending skill-based workshops this fall. In the spring, they will join us on campus for the continuation of HRAP which will include participating in academic courses, networking with the human rights community in NYC and DC, and sharing their work with students at Columbia and other universities.

2016 Advocate Aehshatou Manu is at COP 27 in Egypt. She participated in a panel discussion on the impact of climate change on Indigenous Women. She shared the following with ISHR about the panel: “We focused on using traditional knowledge to adapt and mitigate the impact of climate change in our communities.” Earlier in the day, she spoke at another event on the impact of climate change in Africa and proposed some mitigation strategies.

2021-22 Advocate Mario D'andrea Cañas, the Director of Civilis Derechos Humanos in Venezuela, was a participant in the 2022 Defenders’ Days Conference sponsored by Civil Rights Defenders. 200 human rights defenders from 50 countries gathered in Stockholm where they had a safe space to network, exchange knowledge, and attend workshops over a week.

Aviâja Egede Lynge,  Spokesperson for Children’s Rights in Greenland, gave a talk at Columbia on the above-mentioned topic on October 17th, 2022. The event was co-sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Human Rights and the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race.
