It is with a heavy heart that ISHR must report the passing of 2016 Advocate Raoul Kitungano of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He died on September 15th after a brief illness.

2010 Advocate Bakary Tandia received the 2022 Harlem Honors award as well as proclamations from Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and New York State Senator Cordell Cleare recognizing his contributions to Harlem as well as his human rights advocacy. Bakary spent more than 25 years with African Services Committee (ASC) as policy advocate and case manager. At ASC, he represented the organization at UN meetings and on the board of The New York Immigration Coalition. Tandia is a co-founder of The Abolition Institute which works to abolish slavery, particularly in Mauritania.

Where the pandemic kept the 2020-21 HRAP on Zoom for the entire program, the 2022 International AIDS Conference in Canada in July brought two members of the pioneering cohort together in person for the first time: Itoro Douglas Ekanem of Nigeria (left) and Ruben Avila Reyna of Mexico. Ekanem is the chair of The PACT, a coalition of youth organizations working on HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Ruben is the youth program officer at Fòs Feminista, an international alliance for sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice.
