Exit, Africa’s largest LGBTQIA+ newspaper, has selected 2016 HRAP Advocate Samuel Matsikure as one of its 2022 Queer Warriors. This honor is awarded to “iconic leaders across the African continent that are fearless in their convictions; and give their minds, bodies and souls to the greater LGBTQIA+community, all in the name of love.”

Julie Ciccolini graduated from the Human Rights Studies M.A. (HRSMA) program in 2018. She was selected for the 2022 Outstanding Recent Alumni Award. The Outstanding Recent Alumni Award honors individuals who have graduated within the past fifteen years and have excelled in the early stages of their careers.

2016 Advocate Aehshatou Manu of Cameroon visited NYC during UN Climate Week in her capacity as a member of REALEAC, a network of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in Central Africa. With the support of the Rainforest Foundation US, the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC), a coalition of IPLCs from Latin America, Africa, and Asia, invited representatives of member organizations including REALEAC to attend.

We are very glad that Columbia now celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The University has followed the appeal of Native American students and numerous other students, faculty and staff over the years asking for this Day to be honored. The celebration of the Day is a clear trend among various other universities as well as cities and states in this country. We note that this year Indigenous Peoples’ Day is marked by various events around campus, a positive development indeed.

Congratulations to 2019 Advocate Nodjigoto Charbonnel and his organization Association Jeunesse pour la Paix et la Non-Violence (AJPNV) for winning the 2022 Rafto Prize. The Rafto Prize Award Statement in part says Nodjigoto and AJPNV were chosen for “their courageous struggle to abolish torture in Chad as well as internationally.
