Sri Lanka is in economic freefall. Food prices are soaring. Medicine, fuel, and electricity are in short supply. Foreign exchange reserves for the island nation of 22 million people are just $50 million. Under a cloud of gross mismanagement, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on May 9. Dismayed by the country’s corrupt and incompetent leadership, Sri Lankans also demand the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Chaos has engulfed the country as pitched street battles spiral out of control.

On May 18, ISHR hosted a reception to celebrate the graduating classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022. Three student speakers were featured during the ceremony:

The application of Sweden and Finland to join NATO is historic. Their membership will broaden the circle of NATO members with a democratic government and send a strong message to Vladimir Putin about Russia’s autocracy and aggression against Ukraine. Turkey is, however, threatening to block NATO enlargement.

The 12 participants in the 2021-22 HRAP received their certificates of participation on April 29th at a lunchtime reception attended by faculty, staff, students, and HRAP alumni. Advocates Mario D'Andrea of Venezuela and Dominique St. Vil spoke on behalf of the cohort and thanked staff, faculty, and students for contributing to their HRAP experience.
