    This is an in-person volunteer opportunity.

    Uzima's vision is  ‘Working in partnership with the local government as a trusted partner for community social services in this vulnerable community' and its mission is to empower vulnerable children, women, and men in informal settlements, to be able to lead lives of dignity through psychoeducation, and skills development in a place of safety and compassion.

    Volunteer Responsibilities 

    • Assistance with proposal writing.
    • Designing programs.
    • Assistance with Monitoring and Evaluation Tools.
     
    Required skills:
    Uzima works in an informal settlement called Ezimbuzini based next to the famous Orlando Stadium.  This will be the experience of a lifetime considering the way people live here- social ills, levels of poverty, unemployment, and young girls getting pregnant. It is a very quiet place but rich with what any student can get to further their knowledge of such places across Africa.  
     
    Housing
    While the organization is not able to provide housing, it will work with the student to identify a place to stay.

    To apply, students should email a cover letter and resume to humanrightsed@columbia.edu with the subject line “SVP application - [Name of Organization].” Please submit your application as soon as possible but no later than May 1, 2024. Please indicate the organization(s) that you are interested in working with, the relevance of this work to your studies and how your qualifications relate to each opportunity you are applying for. If you apply for more than one opportunity, please indicate in your cover letter your first and second choices. Applications will then be sent to the hosting organizations, which will request interviews with those students who they feel are the right match. The organizations will make the final decisions which will be announced by the end of May.
