Where the pandemic kept the 2020-21 HRAP on Zoom for the entire program, the 2022 International AIDS Conference in Canada in July brought two members of the pioneering cohort together in person for the first time: Itoro Douglas Ekanem of Nigeria (left) and Ruben Avila Reyna of Mexico. Ekanem is the chair of The PACT, a coalition of youth organizations working on HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Ruben is the youth program officer at Fòs Feminista, an international alliance for sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice.

Founded in southwestern Uganda by 1996 Advocate Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, Nyaka recently opened a Healing Center at Kihihi Health Center IV in Kanungu District through its sexual and gender-based violence program.  The program provides medical care, counseling, and legal advocacy to survivors of sexual violence. Since 2015, this particular Nyaka program has helped nearly 500 survivors and assisted in the prosecution of more than 100 perpetrators, some of the first successful prosecutions in southwest Uganda.

Halifax Pride (Nova Scotia, Canada) invited 2019 Advocate Mariano Ruiz, Project Coordinator at Fundación AMAL Argentina, to headline their Evening Speakers Series. Mariano discussed his experience working with LGBTIQ+ refugees in Argentina and his partnership with the Canadian-based NGO Rainbow Railroad including their most recent project, the Act Together for Inclusion Fund. His participation was possible thanks to the invite through Dignity Network Canada, Equitas, and the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
